I honestly have no idea what I want to research yet. I took a course with Dr. Barry and Dr. McMurrin and I had thought about potential topics for my capstone that I guess I could use for this course. I had considered doing the topic of the use of rhetoric in pamphlets and discussion around Childhood Sexual Abuse and how to spot symptoms or behavior changes. I specifically wanted to focus on the use in schools elementary through high school. I also considered doing that same focus but amongst woman resource centers or places like that. My problem with this topic is I didn't really know how I would study it or interview people because it's such a sensitive topic. I'm completely open to any topic. To be honest, I'm fairly intimidated by the concept of the capstone doing research like that, but I'm also excited.

Hey Kelsi. I agree that a sexual abuse topic would be difficult. I was a 9-1-1 dispatcher for 10 years and struggled each time I took a phone call regarding child abuse, sex crimes, or rape. I wonder if you could contact the Victim's Advocate or Dove Center to get ideas on how to gather research (police records are public records to a point). Perhaps you could interview police detectives who specialize in CAC (crimes against children). If you look to those who help the victims, you might get some good information and find a gap that needs to be filled. Good luck!
Hi Kelsi-Ann, that topic is so difficult yet so important! Especially with the conversations happening in the media right now about the sex trafficing and abuse of children. I agree that doing the capstone research project is intimidating, and there are so many directions and topics to choose from that it gets overwhelming! I like your ideas, and good luck!
Hi Kelsi,

Good suggestions from Rachel and Karianne! Another possibility might be to simply do a discourse analysis of the "rhetoric of pamphlets" as you've mentioned in your blog post. I really like that as it has great possibilities for a PTW-aligned topic.

Start looking at some existing sources out there and let me know if you want to set a brief Zoom conference with me so we can brainstorm about your topic further, ok? Am here. =))

Hang in there,
Dr. B
