Blog #3: The Research Gap

My research gap was fairly major. I had so many sources I could use for the effects of CSA, survivors talking about the issues with therapy, understanding where the issues are with the justice system, etc. I struggled finding sources on rhetoric around CSA though. I feel that CSA is still such a taboo topic that people avoid and still don't know how to talk about. Parents from all cultures has reservations about how to discuss this information with their children. I believe that it would be so beneficial for our society in preventing CSA and helping survivors if it was easier to educate society from in each age group. I think there is a massive gap is rhetoric and educational documentation designed to educate children. I think this would be a great topic for a Ph.D. dissertation or some sort of research study that could make an impact on the situation.

(From Kim Kuhn: Engl 3450, not 3341) Wow! Kelsi-Ann this is such a great discovery. It's true that parents from all cultures don't know how to talk to their children about sexual abuse. It's a very difficult subject. As a BACA member, I've seen how people react when I talk to them about our mission, even with the words sexual abuse. This is why our chapter has been doing presentations for schools (well, before the pandemic). A lot of kids don't realize how to get help or even how to talk about it. If nobody talks about with them, then how will they know how to talk about it with a trusted adult. I'm proud of you for being able to take on this difficult subject.

This topic is definitely one that makes many people feel uncomfortable hearing about which is why I think it is so awesome that you decided to focus on informing people about it. It has been really interesting learning about the different statistics related to child abuse from you. I had no idea that the rates were so high and it is so heartbreaking. It's really great that you have taken on this topic and hopefully others can learn from the information you have found as well.
